Sapphire: The Many Shades of a September Birthday

A symbol of truth, divinity, sincerity and faithfulness.

The heavenly birthstone for September and chosen gem commemorating the 5th and 45th wedding anniversaries.

Sapphire

S

eptember babies...you are one lucky group! Sapphires are one of the big three in colored gemstones  the other two being Emerald and Ruby.  This vibrant gem was first discovered in Kashmir around 1881 following a landslide in the Himalayas, but today it is found all over the world in mines of Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Madagascar and the United States (mainly Montana), and among other countries in Asia and Africa. For centuries, Sapphires have been sought after for its diamond-like hardness and durability as well as its stunning color range.

When we think Sapphire, Blue Sapphire is what commonly comes to mind. But thanks to trace elements in the Corundum mineral, Sapphires come in an array of colors from red, orange, yellow, green, pink, blue and violet the whole spectrum of the rainbow.

We can't talk about Sapphires without highlighting the Erika Winters Mariana Ring that features a 1.79ct untreated, piercing Blue Sapphire set in icy Platinum. With Sapphires, it is common to see heat treatments to enhance their color. Being untreated, this ring is a rare showstopper, allowing the wearer to peek into the striking inclusions and striations of a natural sapphire.

Caring for Your Sapphires

Sapphires are just behind diamonds in hardness, ranking 9 on the Mohs scale. It has excellent toughness and no cleavage, which is a tendency to break when struck. This makes it a great choice for everyday jewelry and heirlooms.

Before you buy your sapphire, ask if it is treated. The September birthstone is often treated to improve its color or clarity. Most commonly, we see heat treatments which bring out beautiful hues. Note, though, if your sapphire is fracture-filled or dyed, it can be damaged by even mild acids like lemon juice.

Warm, soapy water and a soft bristle brush is always safe for a little sprucing up. For deeper cleanings we would love to have you visit our studio and check in on its condition.

Custom is our expertise and we would love to begin the design process with you whether that be with a sapphire or something completely different! We work entirely from scratch or with heirloom gems and jewelry to recreate and bring new life to your meaningful pieces.
